Our top team of runners has raised more than £1,500 for Children’s Hospice South West.
Their hard work has paid off, with an incredible final total now set to be handed over to our charity of the year, Children’s Hospice South West.
The quick-footed running team wants to thank everyone who has donated and helped them over the finish line.
Marion Burrell, Accounting Technician in our Barnstaple office, was one of the runners who took on the notoriously tough 13-mile course across Plymouth.
“I really enjoyed it,” she said, adding that she and the team were all ‘suitably nervous’ at the start before they got into their stride. “Halfway up a long hill, at around six miles in it was a real boost to spot some friends from our Plymouth office waving, shouting and holding a bowl of Jelly Babies,” she said. “I am very pleased to say that I managed to finish in 2hrs 28mins. The hill leading up to the Hoe was tough, but I felt elated to have made it.”
Marion, a member of our Environmental and Social Responsibility team, has run half marathons in the past but was keen to take on a new challenge to get fit again and help a good cause in the process.
She heard that her colleague was looking to set up a Thomas Westcott team for the half marathon and decided to sign up.
“The reality of training was tougher than I remembered,” said Marion, who started going on regular long-distance runs, three times a week. But she found that it could get quite lonely, so she roped in a willing teammate. “When I moaned to my husband that it was a bit of a chore, he said he would come with me on his bike,” said Marion. “This was actually really great for me. We spent time together away from the TV, mobile phones and the kids and actually had conversations (I obviously wasn’t running fast enough as I could still talk while running!).”
Marion and her colleagues – some of them seasoned runners - agree that all the training and the effort needed on the day was worth it.
The £1, 577 they raised between them will go to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), a charity which helps to support children and their families who are living with life-limiting conditions.
Thomas Westcott’s half marathon team members were: Marion Burrell, Bethany Richards, Stuart Carrington, Vicki Wraight, Susan Wall, Matthew Child and Max Zilch.
