We are delighted to welcome Jake Elms as Payroll Operations Manager. We have created this new role in response to growing demand from businesses for our specialist payroll support.

A graduate of the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals, Jake Elms was previously Payroll Manager at Devon firm Darnells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, where he worked for six years. Prior to that, he spent six years as Payroll Administrator at Bishop Fleming.

Based in our Exeter office, Jake will work with Payroll Manager Liz Marker to manage and develop the firm’s payroll offering for businesses.

Thomas Westcott’s payroll department has doubled in size in the last five years and now serves around 1,600 clients ranging from small owner-managed businesses to large companies. The team has significantly expanded its client base during the pandemic as a result of businesses needing support to pay staff during the furlough scheme. A growing number of overseas businesses with UK-based staff have also outsourced their payroll to Thomas Westcott to ensure they fulfil increasingly complex taxation requirements.

Partner Keith Clay said: “I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Jake, who joins our payroll team at an important time. The department has done a fantastic job in challenging circumstances over the last two years and we have now expanded to the point that we need two managers to run the department.

“Payroll is of paramount importance for any business. Firms need a cost-effective, reliable and high quality means of administering their payroll. That’s what we are here to deliver.

“Working with Payroll Manager Liz Marker, Jake will help ensure we continue to expand and maintain the high quality service for which Thomas Westcott is known.

“Jake not only brings a wealth of specialist payroll expertise and knowledge but a client-focused, positive approach that fits with our values and culture here at Thomas Westcott.”

Jake said: “Joining Thomas Westcott is a great opportunity for me to further my career in one of the region’s largest accountancy practices. I am looking forward to helping to grow and develop the department.

“Payroll has changed significantly over the past decade and particularly the last 18 months. Now more than ever, businesses need specialist support to ensure they get it right. Being part of the growing team at Thomas Westcott means I can help give businesses the support they need.”

Jake lives in Newton Abbot with his young family. A keen footballer, he is club secretary for Newton Abbot Spurs A.F.C.
