News & Blog

This month our we talk to Stuart Pedlar, a Chartered Certified Accountant based in our Barnstaple office.

What is you role within Thomas Westcott?

My primary role is as a Manager at our Barnstaple office, working for a portfolio of clients throughout a range of business sectors from new self-employed persons to long established limited companies. Most of my work involves ensuring completion of Annual Accounts, Tax Returns and VAT, but can also include specific special projects. Previously I have also been involved with both Charity and Audit work.

I also helped to co-ordinate the firms Cloud Accounting system and was one of the first people in the country to achieve the Advanced Certified ProAdvisor certification with QuickBooks Online. I am able to advise clients on the option and see how cloud accounting can benefit them, not just for accounts but also for streaming of everyday activities.

How long have you been working here?

I am excitingly close to reaching a decade at Thomas Westcott having started in August 2007 when I completed my A levels at PETROC and haven’t looked back since!

What do you like about working in the Barnstaple office?

From the start, we have always had a great team of people in the office and I consider every one of them good friends. We have a truly committed and friendly team and it inspires us all to do the best we can for our clients. (And it’s also located next door to two bakeries…)

What do you like to do outside of work?

Most of my time is spent with my wife and young family. Our son has a severe health condition so we are always looking for ways to make new memories. I am actively involved with a number of charities, providing support and helping with fundraising events. I am also a very keen swimmer and somehow manage to cycle to work and back every day!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you take with you?

I would have to have my family there, with some fun outdoor games to play and someone serving a carvery.

Do you have any hidden talents?

When my wife and I found out about our son’s condition, I started a vlog/blog channel called ‘Bifida Blog’ on Facebook and YouTube. I started out doing daily videos when he was born and the blog continues to raise awareness for Spina Bifida. So far, it has around 700 followers and our videos have been viewed over 15,000 times.

What do I like most about working at TW?

Thomas Westcott has given me some great opportunities, which have given me the skills I have today. With the introduction of cloud accounting, I have been able to travel across the firm and meet many fantastic clients. It always feels great when you leave a client knowing you have made a difference.
