We have welcomed five new trainee accountants to the firm – taking the number to 30 graduates, school and college leavers now progressing through our trainee programmes and apprenticeships. 

The new intake has been recruited from across the UK and includes graduates of the Universities of Exeter, Swansea and East Anglia, as well as one former student of Belhaven University, Mississippi. 

The five new graduate recruits will be based in our offices across Devon and Somerset. Some are studying for the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification, while others are graduate trainee Chartered Accountants, studying for the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACA) qualification. In addition the firm has a number of their own AAT trainees who qualified this year and who are now progressing further with their studies and studying for ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)

All programmes take approximately three years to complete and during that time the trainees will gain experience in a range of different accountancy disciplines, from audit and assurance to tax and corporate finance.

Managing Partner Shona Godefroy said: “We take our commitment to our trainees’ development very seriously indeed – after all, they are the future of Thomas Westcott. I strongly believe it is important to offer a range of different routes into accountancy, which is why we run our accounting technicians programme for school leavers, as well as our trainee chartered accountant and trainee chartered certified programmes.

“Being a large regional firm, we can offer our trainees access to expertise in a range of specialisms, working with a diverse mix of sectors. We are delighted that so many of them choose to stay with the firm, and continue their careers with Thomas Westcott. It is all about nurturing potential.”  

Our training programmes are run in partnership with Reed Business School, with the trainees spending 20 per cent of their time studying for their professional qualifications. 

 

Case studies

Courtney Isaac

Originally from Ilfracombe, 23 Courtney who works in our Ilfracombe office, started her ACCA training in March having worked with another accountancy firm. She said: “Thomas Westcott offered me the opportunity to join a large firm and complete my accountancy training while staying in the local area. Balancing my work and study is hard work but I am really enjoying it. Thomas Westcott gives me the best of both worlds – it’s a large firm but the offices have a small, local feel. I am particularly interested in tax advice so that is where I want to progress in my career, but my training with Thomas Westcott is giving me a breadth of experience.

Becky Ford 

Becky Ford, 25, recently completed her training with Thomas Westcott and has now achieved her ACA qualification. Originally from Exeter, and with a Chemistry degree from Cardiff University, Becky is now working in the Corporate Finance team, based in the Exeter office. She said: “Starting the programme felt daunting as there was so much to learn. The firm has been really accommodating and has such a friendly feel. Over the past three years I have grown in confidence, having gained experience of a broad range of accountancy specialisms. Through the programme I found that I really enjoy working with different types of businesses, so I am delighted to now be part of the firm’s growing corporate finance team.”

Sean Bolter

Sean Bolter, 34, now works as a tax specialist in Thomas Westcott’s fast-growing Plymouth office. He recently achieved his ACA, having joined at the age of 31. Originally from Plymouth, Sean came with experience of running his own business and working in another accountancy firm. “Having gone straight into work after leaving school, I originally studied for the AAT,” he said.  “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to study for the ACA with Thomas Westcott. It is really tough, but the company is very flexible and has helped me to shape the career I want. I don’t think I would have got such a breadth of experience if I had joined a different firm. I have gained a broad knowledge, as well as developing my tax specialism, which, along with the experience I earned in my previous roles, will serve me well as I progress in my career.”
