As one of the largest independent accountancy practices in the South West, we are committed to supporting initiatives that help people further their careers. One way we do this is by offering work placements.

Thomas Westcott was approached by the Rugby Players Association to offer work experience opportunities for athletes who are interested in a career in accountancy.

By opening up our doors, we are able to give players an insight into what life after rugby could be like working in an accountancy firm.

Ian Whitten recently joined our team for a number of days, to not only learn more about what a potential career in accountancy entails, but to discover what it’s like to work at Thomas Westcott. Professional rugby player, Ian, currently plays for South West team Exeter Chiefs, and previously played for Ulster.

Ian already had an interest in a career in accountancy before he became a professional rugby player. He has an accountancy degree, and has completed all but one of his ACCA exams through home study, so Thomas Westcott was the ideal fit for him.

In his work placement here at Thomas Westcott, Ian had experience in a number of different teams, learning about a number of areas of the business. He spent time with me in the Business Recovery and Insolvency department as well as with the Corporate Finance team, the General Accounts team and in the Tax department.

Through learning more about what accountancy, and Thomas Westcott, has to offer, Ian now has a deeper insight into a potential accountancy career after rugby.

We are looking forward to continuing to build a strong working relationship with various sporting bodies, offering further opportunities for all athletes, past and present. We are committed to helping them to learn more about accountancy as a profession, and as a great career prospect outside of their sporting opportunities.
