As we were busy working through to help clients check that HMRC are showing them as eligible for the SEISS and ensuring they have everything they will need to make a claim promptly, the government made a couple of announcements yesterday that will help some businesses in the short and medium term.

  • The first was confirmation that the planned business rates revaluations scheduled to be undertaken in 2021 will now be postponed for all businesses until 2022. This will at least give certainty for businesses that either business rates should not increase until 2022 or when current exemptions are lifted that they will not suddenly get a large increase immediately.
  • Secondly is a relief specifically targeted at dairy farmers who have seen a significant drop in milk demand. Although full details are awaited what we know so far is:

o   It will apply to those farmers who have lost more than 25% of their income over April and May due to Covid-19 disruptions.

o   Eligible dairy farmers will be able to claim up to £10,000 each.
